On 01.11.2023 a “Workshop on Patent Drafting” was organized by the Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with the IPR Club. The session was handled by Dr. A. Andrew Roobert, Associate Professor/ECE, Francis Xavier Engineering College. 44 students and 2 faculties participated. This event was coordinated by Dr P S Suja Pon Mini, professor/ Chemistry and Dr A Amutha, Assistant Professor/Chemistry of Francis Xavier Engineering College.

The guest speaker being the patent holder of 10 patents he started the speech with the introduction of patent and the rights enjoyed by the patent holder on his patent. The speaker said the primary goal of this workshop is to enhance participants understanding of the patent application process and equipping them with the necessary skills to draft effective and comprehensive patent applications. He defined patent, an exclusive right granted for an invention, which is a product or a process that provides, in general, a new way of doing something, or offers a new technical solution to a problem. He said there are three types of patents: utility, design and plant. Utility and plant patent applications can be provisional and non-provisional. He said the main parts of drafting are title of the invention, field of the invention, background of the invention, object of the invention, summary of the invention, brief description of the drawing, detailed description of the invention, claim(s) and abstract. He explained the way to write each parts with examples. The interaction between the students and the resource person was highly motivating to all the participants. The session came to an end with the feedback of the students.
