As a part of National Pollution Control day, on 14th December 2023, Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized an Expert Talk on “Sustainable Development for a Clean and Healthy Planet”. The resource person for the program was Mr. M. Robinson, Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli. 42 civil engineering Students and 1 faculty member attended the program. The session was coordinated by Mrs. P. Raja Priya, Assistant Professor, Department of civil engineering, FXEC.

The resource person explained the need and importance for sustainable development for a clean and healthy planet. He highlighted the evil effects of pollution in in water, air and in all the aspects where human beings are affected very badly. He said in the name of development the healthy living practices should not be curtailed or damaged. He also emphasised that the integration of economic, social and environmental factors to create a balanced and resilient society. He also explained how an engineer should prepare himself to do the sustainable practices. He also shared the challenges and solutions for the sustainable development and its practices with many examples like climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, drought and water scarcity, resource depletion and deforestation.

The resource person also summarized the five sustainable construction methods such as waste reduction, recycling, energy conservation, green buildings and use of sustainable resources (solar energy, wind energy etc.). He said being the civil engineering students you must try to practice the sustainable practices while planning the construction and while using the materials for the construction. Sustainable development is a pathway between human activities and the earth’s natural systems creating a foundation for a clean and healthy planet. Students interacted with the guest speaker and clarified their doubts.
