Intellectual Property Rights

On 29th January 2024, Entrepreneurship Development Cell and IIC in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized an Expert Talk on “Intellectual Property Rights”. The resource person for the program was Dr. M. Kannan, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Francis Xavier Engineering College, Tirunelveli. 44 civil engineering Students and 1 faculty attended the program. The session was coordinated by Mrs. P. Raja Priya, Assistant Professor, Department of civil engineering, FXEC.

The speaker stated that Intellectual Property Rights plays a crucial role in fostering innovations and protecting the creations of human intellect. The speaker elaborated the various forms of legal protection which includes patents that safeguards inventions and technological advancements; trademarks that protects distinctive symbols, names, logos that identifies products or services; copyrights that secures original literary, artistic and musical works; trade secrets that safeguards confidential business information; industrial designs that protects the visual design of the objects.

He made a note that similar to tangible property IP can be bought, sold, licensed and protected under legal frameworks. It also safeguards and commercializes intangible assets contributing to economic growth and technological advancements. The innovation filing process was also discussed with the students. The application process involves submitting comprehensive documentation, undergoing examination and ultimately obtaining legal recognition and protection for the intellectual creations.
