Indian Army Day

2022-01-25

Introduction

India will be celebrating 74th Army Day on January 15, 2022. Each year on this day, the soldiers of the army are honoured, who have served the nation selflessly and set the greatest example of brotherhood. This day is celebrated at all Army Command Headquarters.

Historical Background

On April 1, 1895, the Indian Army was officially established. However, in 1949, once India got its independence the Army got its first chief. It was on this historical day, the formal handing over of the Indian Army took place. General Sir Francis Butcher handed over the baton to Lieutenant General KM Cariappa.

In 1947, in the war against Pakistan on the western border, Lt Gen Cariappa led the Indian Army. On January 14, 186, he became the second highest ranking officer in the Indian Army when he received the title of Field Marshal of India. The first officer to receive this highest ranking was Sam Manekshaw in 1973.

The transfer of power from the British to India is the most important chapter in the history of India and its independence from foreign rule. On this day all the Command Headquarters as well as the main headquarter in New Delhi celebrate this day, when there are military parades as well as display of the latest technology the Indian Army has either acquired or incorporated in service.

Importance of celebrating Indian Army Day

It reminds us of the lengthy process of independence

Even though India got its independence in 1947, the official handover of the Indian Army did not take place until two years later in 1949. India also declared its own constitution and became a republic in 1950. This reminds us that independence was not won in a day and was part of a lengthy process.

We pay respect to our country’s military leaders

India’s military leaders have bravely fought wars along the borders and have kept the country’s security intact. One of the reasons Field Marshal Cariappa was awarded his special rank even after retirement was due to the stellar leadership and service he provided in the territorial battles for Kashmir after independence.

It is a chance to read upon the army

The Indian army has a rich history of contributing to international warfare and security issues even before independence. The region has a rich military history even before India was a British colony, when it was a collection of different kingdoms and states. There is a wealth of material available in various formats that we can consume both online and offline.

Army Day Celebration

All Army Command headquarters celebrate Army Day to honor the soldiers of the country, who live for the protection of its independence and its dignity and give their lives for it. Grand celebrations take place all across the country on this day. The main Army Day parade is conducted in Cariappa Parade ground in Delhi cantonment where salute is given to the fighters of the country. Military hardware, different contingents and a combat display are part of the parade. Gallantry awards and Sena medals are also awarded to the soldiers for their bravery on this day

Army Day Parade

Army day parade during the army day celebration is carried out by the Indian army soldiers (Indian army bands) which involves the exhibition of BLT T-72, T-90 tanks, Brahmos Missile, carrier Mortar Tracked Vehicle, 155 MM Soltum Gun, Advanced Light Helicopters of the Army Aviation Corps and etc. Serving Indian armies take a pledge at this day to maintain their service and protect the nation from enemies whether they are foreign or domestic.

They have the power to kill death because they are the Indian soldiers. Let us salute our soldiers and bow to them for they are the real heroes in uniform. They lose the best years of life, best of their comfort for our happy lives. Being an army man is the highest honour and the best job to have. They don’t even mind giving their lives for us…. They are our brave soldiers. Wishing a very happy Indian Army Day to our soldiers. Jai Hind
